Domestic Meat Inspection Program

Purpose:

To provide voluntary inspection of abbattoirs and meat processing plants to help ensure food safety.

Background:

Under the Domestic Meat Inspection Program abattoirs and meat processing plants can request inspection.

Domestic inspected plants can sell meat only in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is contracted to provide the meat inspection service.

Impact:

Currently there are 12 abattoirs and meat processing plants in the Domestic Meat Inspection Program. Three cities require any meat being sold within their boundaries to have been inspected.
