Intensive Livestock Operation Regulatory Program

Updated:  April 2004

Purpose:

To develop environmentally sound intensive livestock operations.

Background:

The Agricultural Operations Act, requires operators to obtain approval for waste storage and waste management plans for intensive livestock operations. Agricultural Operations personnel provide technical support to applicants for facility design, nuisance and pollution control, waste management and public process. Applications are referred to agencies inside and outside government to identify water-protection issues which may require resolution.

Impact:

Safe responsible development of the industry. Over 2,300 approvals for intensive beef, hog, dairy and poultry operations have been issued since 1971.
