Eligibility to Apply

In order to be eligible to apply for PTA funding you must:

  • be a Saskatchewan resident accepted in an approved training program;
  • be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or designated as a Protected Person; and
  • be enrolled in an approved program at an approved training centre; and
  • have financial need according to program criteria; and
  • not be in default on a previous Provincial Training Allowance (i.e. you have failed to repay past PTA overpayments).

If you are a student with a permanent disability, you will be provided with PTA to assist with living costs. EAPD funding may be provided to assist with disability related costs.

You are not eligible for student loans for the same period you are receiving the PTA.

If you are enrolled in a PTA eligible course, you will not be denied funding if you have defaulted on federal or provincial student loans or are restricted from receiving loans for any other reason.

Funding will be withheld or denied if:

  • you do not provide information to verify income reported on your PTA application. Further assistance will be denied until the verification information is provided.
  • you have provided false or misleading information or have not complied with an audit request.

Eligible Programs

The PTA is available for basic education and related studies, bridging and Quick Skills (4 - 11 weeks) Training which are not approved for student loan funding. Specific programs eligible for the PTA are approved by the Programs Branch of Saskatchewan Advanced Education and Employment or Canada-Saskatchewan Career and Employment Services.

Post-secondary programs of 12 or more weeks as well as some Quick Skills Training programs will not be eligible for the PTA. Financial assistance may be available through the Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loans Program.

Assistance Available

The PTA will not be issued for less than 1 month (defined as 4 weeks; 20 training days in a 28 calendar day period).

You will be funded for periods of no more than 12 months on each application. You are required to re-apply for each 12 month period if a program is longer than 12 months.

If you are enrolled in a training program which includes breaks (i.e. Christmas, Easter), you may receive PTA funding during the break(s) as long as the training centre deems it appropriate for the you to remain on PTA and you return to the program after the break. You are expected to report any income earned during your breaks in the same way as you are expected to report earnings during your program.

You may be eligible for funding for summer breaks (July and August) provided the program ends in June and resumes again before September 15th. You must complete a Break Funding Request Form to receive this funding.
