Andrew Thomson is working to ensure
Saskatchewan is the best place in Canada to live, work, and raise a family.
As Minister of Finance, securing Saskatchewan’s prosperity is a top priority
for Andrew. He believes that by doing more to encourage business to expand
and invest here, that we can ensure Saskatchewan remains a “have province”
for years to come. He also believes strongly that that we need to make sure
Saskatchewan people share in today’s prosperity through continued tax relief
and improved public services.
As Minister of Information Technology, Andrew is supporting Saskatchewan’s
IT sector by encouraging business growth and by expanding the award-winning
CommunityNet program. CommunityNet is now the largest contiguous high-speed
network in the world and helps provide access to high-speed internet service
for up to 86% of Saskatchewan people and businesses.
Andrew was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1995 and was
re-elected in 1999 and 2003. In 2001, he joined the Cabinet as Minister of
Energy and Mines where he worked to reform oil and gas royalties that have
helped spur the expansion and redevelopment of the sector. Later, as
Minister of Corrections and Public Safety, Andrew worked with local
communities and agencies to reduce youth crime and improve the province’s
security infrastructure.
Most recently, as Minister of Learning he undertook the most significant
reforms of the province’s education system in 60 years in an effort to
streamline the system and improve the quality of education for Saskatchewan
students. He also established the Literacy Commission to improve access to
basic skills for ordinary citizens
Today, in addition to being Minister of Finance, Andrew is Chairman of the
Treasury Board, Vice-Chairman of the Crown Investment Corporation and is
Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy.
Andrew was born and raised in rural Saskatchewan. He earned his Bachelor’s
degree in Political Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and worked
for the provincial government prior to being elected to the Legislature.
Andrew lives in and represents the constituency of Regina South. |
