Water is making big news in Canada these days, for lots of different reasons.

Since Thursday, November 16, Vancouver residents have been under an advisory to boil tap water. The reason? Mudslides into the reservoirs where the city gets its water supply have caused a high level of turbidity—the cloudiness caused by particles suspended in water. Unsurprisingly, sales of bottled water have exploded.

A new filtration system is scheduled to be built in a few years that will alleviate this problem for Vancouverites in the future. But others in Canada aren’t as lucky.

Today, there are dozens of communities across the country, mostly rural and First Nations, where boil water advisories are in force year-round. The town of Kashechewan, for example, had to be relocated because of bacteria-infected drinking water.

Could the same thing happen in your town?
