Description:

The mission of the Regina Home Economics for Living Project (HELP) contributes to the well-being of the community through programs with an emphasis on empowering at-risk individuals to help themselves.

HELP's vision is to: Educate, Empower - Everyday "Helping People Help Themselves".

HELP involves and assists families and individuals in the development of their own skills and abilities in the areas of nutrition, food shopping, food preparation, basic budgeting, time and money management. These skills enable people to assume control of their own resources both human and economic.

The Project provides:
- basic budgeting
- education on daily living choices
- food preparation
- money management at an appropriate literacy level
- skills and training in the areas of nutrition and food shopping

The Project is delivered by trained facilitators, i.e., home economists, teachers and nutritionists who are trained in nutrition, family finance, and home management.

Programs are available in the areas of:
- Banking Fundamentals
- Basic Budgeting
- Basic Nutrition
- Consumer Awareness
- Dealing With Debt

- Food Preparation At Low Cost
- Money Management
- Obtaining and Using Credit
- Rental Awareness
- Shopping Skills
- Ways To Cut Food Costs

Programs are available as:
- group classes (requested by agencies and on referrals)
- hands on instruction
- one to one instruction
- training workshops for both clients and agency staff

Comments:
All service or program requests are worked on with the agency or individual making the request, in order to meet the specific need they have identified.

There are no "package programs". Specific need requests can be developed as programs.

Publications available for sale:

Cookbooks:
- Diabetic Friendly Cooking: 61 pages containing low cost, lower fat content recipes developed for people with diabetes. ($7.50)

- One Pot Meals: 61 pages containing low cost, lower fat content recipes that include at least three food groups and a section on basic mixes. ($7.50)

- What to Do When Food Goes Yuck: 63 pages containing information on how to prepare distressed foods into low cost, lower fat content recipes. ($7.50)

Consumer Manuals:
- Module A: 55 pages, what are consumers, what are their rights and responsibilities. ($15.00)

- Module B: 102 pages, contracts, warranties, guarantees, shopping at the store, at home, other ways to shop, what do you do when you have problems with what you bought. ($25.00)

- Module C: 174 pages, comparison shopping, shopping for food, clothing, furniture, and appliances, buying a used car, buying services and renting a place to live ($35.00)

- Modules A, B and C: ($60.00)

Food Fact Sheets:
- 65 individual foods are discussed, explaining why they are good foods, how to shop for them, how to use them, and how to store them. (From $.25 to $.50 each or $5.00 to $10.00 for Master)

Manuals:
- Grow Regina Manual: 123 pages of information on growing a vegetable garden, what plants, weeds and bugs look like, preserving freezing and canning. ($15.00 each or $45.00 for Master)

- Kitchen Smarts: 88 pages of information on kitchen equipment, recipe substitution, food safety, kitchen cleanliness and what to do when appliances stop working. ($15.00 each or $50.00 for Master)

- Shopping Skills: 109 pages of information on Canada's Guide to Healthy Eating, what is a serving, shopping for food, reading food labels and storing food. ($15.00 each or $50.00 for Master)

There is a basic fee for service, which depends on the length of the workshop, or on the series of workshops.
