Forensic Technology WAI Inc., Montreal, Quebec

India is the newest market for Montreal-based Forensic Technology WAI Inc. (FTI). The company's leading edge technology is already helping law enforcement agencies in more than 26 countries worldwide to better address the criminal misuse of firearms and effectively manage information across the entire criminal justice system--from the crime scene to the courtroom.

The 2002 Canada Trade Mission to India presented an ideal opportunity for FTI to examine India's requirements with a view to modernizing crime laboratories and helping to combat firearm-related violence and terrorism throughout the country. "India is a big project for us," said Mohammed Naeem, FTI's International Sales Manager. "Our potential client was very interested in our products and our participation in the trade mission helped speed up negotiations." FTI signed an agreement during the mission with a Mumbai-based company to provide training and technology for automating and networking law enforcement agencies in 25 state and central forensic science laboratories in India.

According to FTI President Robert A. Walsh, Canadian trade commissioners have been instrumental in the company's success in a number of countries. "Commercial attaché staff have always been available when we needed them," said Walsh. "They do everything they can to assist Canadian business ventures abroad."

FTI's high-tech crime-solving tools include the Integrated Ballistics Identification System, IBIS, which digitally captures the images of bullets and cartridge cases, stores them in a database, performs automatic comparisons and ranks them according to the likelihood of a match. B·A·R·D, which stands for Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, is an information management system for the easy exchange and sharing of data between the law enforcement and criminal justice communities. FTI also produces a software package called Gunsights, which is a reference collection of detailed firearms specifications and images.

A member of the Walsh Group, FTI employs 165 people in Montreal and has offices in Largo, Florida, Washington, D.C., Ireland and South Africa.
