Info-Electronics Systems (IES) Inc. has been providing project management, technical design and
integration services in India since 1995. The Montreal-based firm has an office with 22 people in Delhi
and a strong knowledge of the market. So why did Dr. Harinder P.S. Ahluwalia, IES President, join
the Canada Trade Mission to India? Primarily, for the opportunity to make important contacts on a
number of levels.
"Firstly, we wanted to meet with key government and industry officials," says Dr. Ahluwalia. "We held
talks with personnel from the India Space Research Organization, the Department of Science and
Technology and a number of universities and institutes such as the Disaster Management Institute of
India. Secondly, being part of the delegation made it easier to look around for other companies that
could help us increase our business in India or supply us with unique products and services to market in
Canada."
The trip was also an excellent opportunity to network with other Canadian company and government
representatives. "Obviously, we could meet them in Canada too," adds Dr. Ahluwalia, who also
participated in the Team Canada 1996 trade mission to the region. "But the friendships which develop
from being together for a week in a foreign country are quite strong, from a business perspective."
IES has carved out a niche for itself handling the ins and outs of projects in India and around the world,
acting on its own behalf or that of other North American firms. Its high profile projects in India include
the provision of hydrometeorological data collection systems for forecasting weather conditions, floods,
cyclones and avalanche conditions in the Himalayas, as well as a Ground Data Processing system for
India's most recent remote-sensing satellite.
