PETTIGREW TO LEAD CANADA TRADE MISSION TO CENTRAL EUROPE
September 7, 2000 (1:10 p.m. EDT) No. 212
PETTIGREW TO LEAD CANADA TRADE MISSION
TO CENTRAL EUROPE
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew will lead a Canadian trade mission to
Central Europe from September 10 to 15 to promote Canada's trade interests and to
strengthen bilateral ties in the region. He will be accompanied by representatives from
more than 54 Canadian companies and organizations doing business in Hungary, the
Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
"Central Europe offers Canadian enterprises a great many untapped opportunities with
the rise of its new market economies," said Mr. Pettigrew. "Canada's trade in the region
has increased over the past five years, but it needs to be more actively encouraged."
Canada's two-way merchandise trade with the four countries on this mission exceeded
$500 million in 1999, and Canadian direct investment in the region is estimated at
$1.5 billion. Canadian exporters participating in the mission represent all regions of the
country and a wide range of sectors, including information technology and
telecommunications, environmental products and services, agri-food, energy,
transportation, construction and building products, financial services, and medical and
pharmaceutical products.
During visits to Budapest, Bratislava, Prague and Ljubljana, Minister Pettigrew will hold
bilateral meetings with senior government officials of all four countries, including the
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
the Economy, the Czech ministers of Trade and Industry and Finance, and the Slovene
Prime Minister and ministers of Economic Relations and Development and Finance.
Mr. Pettigrew also plans to sign bilateral co-operation agreements during these
meetings.
"It is important for Canadian entrepreneurs to establish a strong presence in these
countries prior to their accession to the European Union," said Minister Pettigrew.
"Developing closer links and increasing our trade and investment activity in the region
can only benefit both Canada and our Central European partners."
