BUSINESSES AND PARLIAMENTARIANS DEVELOPING NEW TRADE
AND INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN INDIA
International Trade Minister Jim Peterson today concluded a five-day trade mission to
India that helped Canadian companies and parliamentarians to forge stronger links with
their counterparts in Mumbai and New Delhi. The Minister will also travel to Chennai
tomorrow to officially open a new Canadian consulate, which will further promote
bilateral trade with southern India.
"With a middle-income class of more than 250 million people, India represents a huge
opportunity for Canadian business," said Minister Peterson. "The people-to-people
contacts established here will go a long way toward enhancing trade between our two
countries."
Some 65 representatives from over 50 Canadian businesses and various government
departments and agencies participated in the April 3-7 mission to Mumbai and New
Delhi, two of India's major business and R&D centres. Key sectors of interest include
agriculture, financial services, and infrastructure, specifically in the areas of energy,
information and communications technology and transportation.
The trade mission also contributed to deepening science and technology relations
between Canada and India. In a joint declaration, the governments of Canada and India
agreed to work toward greater cooperation on science and technology, building on the
existing linkages between the two countries in academia, government and the private
sector.
In addition, it was agreed that Canada will be the partner country of the 11th
Technology Summit and Technology Platform in New Delhi next September. This
summit will provide an opportunity to showcase Canadian innovation.
Minister Peterson also announced that efforts to intensify Canada's presence in India
would be assisted by the appointment of Export Development Canada's first permanent
representative in India, Peter Nesbitt. EDC will provide a range of services to Canadian
companies that wish to expand or establish their presence in India.
The new consulate in Chennai will further increase Canadian representation in India,
which already includes the High Commission in New Delhi, two consulates general (one
in Mumbai and one in Chandigarh), an honorary consulate in Kolkata and a trade office
in Bangalore.
"By extending our presence on the ground, we are helping Canadian business to take
part in India's growing success long after the trade mission returns to Canada," said
Minister Peterson. "We will continue to invest in areas that will bring long-term benefits
to both Canadian and Indian businesses."
Parliamentarians Johanne Deschamps, Ted Menzies, Deepak Obhrai, and Health
Minister Ujjal Dosanjh joined the trade mission to India.
