Welcome to the
Canadian Embassy in Belgrade

On May 21, 2006 Montenegro held an independence referendum. The vote was just over the 55% threshold agreed to with the EU and on June 3, 2006 Montenegro declared independence. The EU, OSCE and other observers were satisfied that the referendum question asked and conduct of the referendum were fair and gave an accurate reflection of Montenegrin opinion. June 3 the Parliament of Montenegro declared the Republic of Montenegro an independent country. June 5 the Serbian Parliament proclaimed the end of the State Union with Montenegro and proclaimed itself the continuing state in accordance with the Constitutional charter of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Serbia has since explicitly recognized Montenegro. June 13 Minister Mackay wrote to the Montenegrin Foreign Minister recognizing the new Republic and agreeing to hold discussions with Montenegro on establishing diplomatic relations.
