STATEMENT BY MINISTER PETTIGREW ON BOMBING IN HILLA,
IRAQ
Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew today issued the following statement
condemning the bombing in Hilla, Iraq:
"Canada strongly condemns today's attack, which took the lives of so many innocent
Iraqis. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and
friends of those who were injured or killed.
"Last month's elections clearly demonstrated the desire of the Iraqi people to come
together and to build upon the foundations of democracy. Canada encourages them to
stand united against such monstrous acts and to continue to build a more peaceful,
prosperous and secure future, despite attempts by insurgents to upend the process and
provoke sectarian strife. Canada stands ready to assist in building these capacities."
