MARCHI ANNOUNCES TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS
TO EDC BOARD
International Trade Minister Sergio Marchi today announced the appointments of
Joy F. Kane of Ottawa and Grace S. White of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to the Board
of Directors of Export Development Corporation (EDC).
"These two women bring special knowledge and experience to EDC," said Minister
Marchi. "Their backgrounds in finance and international business are a welcome
addition to the Board."
Ms. Kane is currently Assistant Deputy Minister, International Trade and Finance,
in the federal Department of Finance. She has 20 years' experience as an
economist and a senior public servant in the Government of Canada.
Ms. White, President and CEO of CanJam Trading Ltd., a Canadian-based
international trading company, has been active in business in Atlantic Canada
since 1978. In 1993, she was named Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in the
International Competitiveness Category.
EDC provides a full range of trade finance services, helping Canadian exporters
and investors to do business in 200 countries, including higher-risk and emerging
markets. Founded in 1944 as a Crown corporation, EDC operates as a commercial
financial institution. It reports to Parliament through the Minister for
International Trade.
These appointments are effective immediately.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Joy F. Kane was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister for the International Trade
and Finance Branch of the federal Department of Finance on March 23, 1998.
Ms. Kane first joined the Department of Finance in 1978 as an economist with the
Capital Markets Division, and has held a variety of positions in both the Fiscal
Policy and Social Policy Divisions. She was appointed Assistant Director, Social
Policy Division, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch in the
Department of Finance in April 1989, advancing to Director in 1990. She also has
experience in Health Canada, where she spent six years as Director, Social Policy
(1983-89). Ms. Kane was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services,
Department of Finance and Treasury Board Secretariat on September 18, 1995,
before assuming her current position in March of this year.
Ms. Kane was born in Toronto and graduated from York University with an Honours
Bachelor of Arts (Economics) in 1977. She received a Masters in Economics from
the University of Western Ontario in 1978.
Grace S. White is the President and CEO of CanJam Trading Ltd, a home-based
international trading company established in 1989 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
CanJam distributes frozen fish, poultry, beef and pork to customers all over the
world including Jamaica, the United States, Asia, Europe and Canada. The company
completed its fifth full year in business with sales of more than $6.5 million.
Ms. White was named the Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year for 1993 in the
International Competitiveness category. She is a former director of the Human
Resources Development Association and the Halifax Board of Trade. She is
currently Vice-Chair of the Nova Scotia Business Development Corporation, a
member of the Nova Scotia Trade Council and she is on the Advisory Board of the
Frank S. Sobey Faculty of Commerce at Saint Mary's University. She is also a
Business Advisor for the SEA Program at Henson College and has recently been
appointed to the Management Consortium for the Nova Scotia Environmental
Industries and Technologies Program.
Ms. White was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and attended Saint Mary's University,
Halifax, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1978. She also holds
the designation of Chartered Financial Planner.
