CANADA CONDEMNS DETENTION OF PROMINENT BURMESE
PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency, today issued the following statement on the detention of
three prominent Burmese pro-democracy activists:
“Canada is deeply concerned by the detention of Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Htay
Kway and calls for their immediate and unconditional release. This is another example
of the methods used by the current government to continue to deny freedom and
democracy in Burma.
“Canada urges Burma to respect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the
Burmese people.”
