CANADA WELCOMES AGREEMENT ON NEPAL PEACE PROCESS
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency, welcomed the landmark agreement reached on
November 8, 2006, between the Seven-Party Alliance and the Communist Party of
Nepal (Maoists).
“This agreement on crucial security and political arrangements prepares the way toward
a sustainable peace in Nepal,” said Minister MacKay. “Canada congratulates the
negotiating parties, and encourages them to continue to work toward the successful
implementation of the agreement’s provisions.”
The ruling Seven-Party Alliance has concluded a comprehensive agreement with the
Maoists to bring sustainable peace and democracy to Nepal. The agreement provides
for the United Nations to monitor the disarmament of the Maoists and their integration
into the interim legislature. It is an important step toward the conclusion of a
comprehensive peace agreement.
