STATEMENT BY MINISTER MACKAY ON UNSC RESOLUTION ON
IRAN’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency, today issued the following statement regarding the
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1696 on Iran’s nuclear program:
“Canada fully supports the Resolution issued today by the UNSC, reiterating the
international community’s serious concerns about Iran’s past and ongoing nuclear
activities. The UNSC Resolution clearly states the international community’s desire for a
negotiated diplomatic solution which respects Iran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear
energy while ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. It also
notes Iran’s failure to comply with the measures demanded of it in the UNSC
Presidential Statement of March 29, 2006, as well as in various International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors Resolutions.
“Through this Resolution, the UNSC has made the suspension of Iran’s enrichment and
reprocessing activities mandatory. Canada urges Iran to implement this suspension
immediately and to enter into negotiations toward a long-term comprehensive
settlement, on the basis of the proposal offered on June 6 by the EU High
Representative on behalf of China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and
the United States.
“Canada also supports the UNSC’s determination to reinforce the authority of the IAEA
in order to resolve all outstanding issues pertaining to the nature and scope of Iran's
nuclear program. Canada urges Iran to cooperate fully with the IAEA, including through
resumed application of the Additional Protocol to its Comprehensive Safeguards
Agreement, as a necessary step toward a long-term comprehensive settlement.”
