Jean-Pierre Juneau
Jean-Pierre Juneau Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the North Atlantic Council

The Heads of State and Government of the 26 NATO member countries met on 28 and 29 November 2006 in Riga, Latvia, to discuss key issues for the Alliance.

The Riga Summit was an important opportunity to reaffirm the strength and unity of the Alliance while also allowing for a reinforcement of the transatlantic partnership. At Riga, leaders measured the progress made with regard to transformation, a process that aims at guaranteeing that the Alliance is well adapted to face the threats of today's more complex security environment. Particular attention was devoted to the NATO mission in Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

For Canada, NATO remains a vital security organization. Our ability to partner with our Allies from both sides of the Atlantic to address emerging challenges and threats is essential to our own security.
