CANADA WELCOMES CONCLUSION OF BISHOP GERARDI TRIAL

IN GUATEMALA

John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today welcomed the successful conclusion of proceedings in Guatemala, in the case of the murder of Roman Catholic Bishop and prominent human rights defender Juan Gerardi in 1998.

"Canada salutes the courage and determination of the human rights activists, witnesses and court officials who brought this case to trial," said Mr. Manley. "The case is important, not only in terms of addressing the legacies of Guatemala's difficult past, but also as a clear signal of support to human rights defenders in Guatemala and throughout the region."

The Minister also noted that Canada remains a strong supporter of the peace process initiated by the signing of the 1996 peace accord in Guatemala, and continues to assist in the country's national efforts to strengthen democracy and improve respect for human rights.

David Kilgour, Secretary of State for Latin America and Africa, added, "This development reinforces the Government of Guatemala's significant achievements since 1996, while giving new momentum to the implementation of the peace accord to the benefit of all Guatemalans."

Bishop Gerardi was killed two days after releasing a report on atrocities committed during the civil war that ended in 1996. The Guatemalan court sentenced three army officers and a priest to between 20 and 30 years in prison. The trial, which suffered many delays and continued amidst threats and intimidation directed against witnesses and judges, was seen by many observers as a test of Guatemala's justice system.
