International Human Rights Day celebrated in Abidjan
On 9 December 2006, the Canadian Embassy in Côte d'Ivoire, in collaboration with the Ivorian Movement for Human Rights (MIDH), a local NGO, organized an event to mark International Human Rights Day. More than 100 participants from government and civil society attended the event.
Canadian Ambassador Isabelle Massip hosted the morning event and led a lively discussion on impunity, freedom of the press and the International Criminal Court (ICC), followed by a viewing of the The Peacekeepers, a film by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) which documents the Peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The program also included a performance by a local theatre group, who premiered their new play, Ms. ICC. The play was a huge success in its portrayal of the rights of the individual and the role of the ICC. With Canadian support, the play will be performed nationally, and perhaps even throughout La Francophonie, as many countries, particularly in Africa, face similar issues.
