The one-day meeting will be held at the United Nations in New York on Monday, October 21, 1996, during the 51st session of the General Assembly.</font></p> <p><font face="Courier">"Canada believes that lasting peace must be the basis for sustainable development in the West African subregion," said Mrs.&nbsp;Stewart. "We are pleased to join representatives from both developing countries and the donor community in the search for effective ways to consolidate the foundation of peace and pave the way for sustainable development."</font></p> <p><font face="Courier">United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has convened the conference to address the serious problems resulting from unabated regional conflicts including those in Liberia and Mali.
