MANLEY PLEASED WITH OPENING
OF UNESCO INSTITUTE FOR STATISTICS IN MONTREAL
John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his pleasure with the opening today of the UNESCO Institute for
Statistics in Montreal. The official opening ceremony was attended by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Martin Cauchon, Minister of National Revenue
and Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec).
"Bringing the Institute to Montreal is the result of close cooperation among UNESCO, the governments of Canada and
Quebec, Montreal International and Canadian academic institutions," said Minister Manley. "The Institute will contribute
to the intellectual vitality and international prestige of Montreal. It will also enable Canadian statisticians to expand their
networks with top-ranking foreign and international institutions in the sector."
The Institute was established by UNESCO to meet the growing needs of member states and the international community
for a wider range of policy-relevant, timely, and reliable statistics in the fields of education, science and technology, culture
and communication.
"Locating this prestigious Institute in Montreal, with the cooperation of Montreal International, is testimony to the vitality
of Quebec's largest city and the richness and diversity of Canada's scientific research and social statistics sectors," said
Minister Cauchon.
The new Institute is headquartered at the Université de Montréal.
