Softwood Lumber Agreement in Force

Further to our message of Friday, October 6, 2006, this message is to confirm that the Canada-United States Softwood Lumber Agreement entered into force on October 12, 2006. Notice to Exporters 145 on the determination of the Regional Trigger Volumes and Quota Volumes will be posted shortly on the department's website.

Exporters of softwood lumber to the United States will be liable for the new export charge on shipments made on or after October 12, 2006. The United States has agreed to revoke the countervailing and anti-dumping duty orders effective October 12, 2006. There will be no double assessment of U.S. duties and Canadian export charges on lumber shipments to the United States. Canadian exporters will have until November 30th to remit their export charges to the Canada Revenue Agency on shipments made during the month of October.
