2004/29 CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
NOTES FOR AN ADDRESS BY
THE HONOURABLE GAR KNUTSON,
MINISTER OF STATE (NEW AND EMERGING MARKETS),
AT THE CANADA-CHINA AEROSPACE TECHNICAL SEMINAR
SHENYANG, China
February 19, 2004
Thank you for your introduction, [Canadian] Ambassador [Joseph] Caron. Mayor Chen,
distinguished guests, it is a great pleasure for me to join you today on the occasion of
the Canada-China Aerospace Technical Seminar.
I would like to take the opportunity to express our appreciation to the Shenyang
municipal government and Shenyang Aircraft Manufacturing Company for your warm
welcome and for this opportunity to showcase our Canadian capabilities in the
aerospace industry. We all know that Liaoning [province] has a long and rich history
and is an important industrial base for China. I understand that Canadian businesses
have already engaged in programs and activities with local enterprises in a broad range
of sectors, including transportation. With your continued support, I am confident that we
can build on these existing ties to extend our relations.
Canada has a very strong and capable aerospace industry. Our aircraft manufacturers,
equipment suppliers and service providers are world renowned for their high-quality
products and services. I take great pleasure in presenting our Canadian delegation to
you. You will note that these firms are some of Canada's finest suppliers of machinery
equipment, manufacturing and testing technologies, and precision-machined
components. Together, they reflect the strength of our aerospace industry. Their
presence here today shows that they are ready to work with you for the benefit of both
of our countries.
China is an important market for Canada. My first visit to China, in my new capacity as
the Minister of State for New and Emerging Markets, demonstrates Canada's
commitment to you. Our goal is to engage China at all levels: economic partnerships,
sustainable industrial development, scientific and technological cooperation, education
and cultural exchanges and beyond.
Previous cooperative projects have laid the foundation for our long-term strategic
partnerships in other high-technology areas, such as nuclear power and
telecommunications, and encourage us to explore more opportunities to work together.
Please accept my best wishes for a fruitful seminar. I look forward with great
anticipation to hearing success stories resulting from today's exchange.
Thank you.
