On 28 June 2002, the new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act was proclaimed. This Law reaffirms the Canadian government's commitment to respect immigrants to Canada and to grant refugee protection to persons who are displaced, persecuted or in danger. It incorporates a number of recent proposals from Canadians, yet maintains the core principles and provisions of the current immigration legislation to: Strengthen the integrity of the refugee determination system; Speed up family reunification; Strengthen efforts to attract skilled immigrants; and Maintains Canada's humanitarian tradition of providing safe haven to people in need of protection.
