<html> <head> <meta name="Generator" content="Corel WordPerfect 8"> <title>KILGOUR TO VISIT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AND PERU</title> </head> <body text="#000000" link="#0000ff" vlink="#551a8b" alink="#ff0000" bgcolor="#c0c0c0"> Media are advised that David Kilgour, Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa), will visit Trinidad and Tobago July 23 and 24 before travelling on to Lima, Peru, for the July 28 inauguration of President-elect Alejandro Toledo. In Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Kilgour will call on Prime Minister Basdeo Panday, and will meet with Mervyn Assam, Minister of Enterprise Development and Foreign Affairs to discuss Caribbean perspectives on the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which is currently being negotiated at the Organization of American States (OAS). The Charter, which was mandated by leaders at the Summit of the Americas in April, will reinforce OAS instruments for the active defence of representative democracy in the hemisphere. He will also meet with Norman Girvan, Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States to discuss the possibilities for closer Canadian co-operation. The Association, with headquarters in Trinidad and Tobago, encourages co-operation among its 25 members, including the Caribbean states, Central American states, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia. In Lima, Mr. Kilgour will represent Canada at the inauguration of President-elect Alejandro Toledo. Mr. Toledo won the second round of presidential elections on June 3, 2001. Mr. Kilgour will also meet with representatives of Canadian businesses in Peru, and will participate in a roundtable discussion with civil society organizations on issues of democracy and institutional reform in Peru. À Trinité-et-Tobago, M. Kilgour rendra visite au premier ministre Basdeo Panday et rencontrera le ministre du Développement commercial et des Affaires étrangères, M.
