<p><font size="-1"></font><font size="-1">Media representatives are advised that Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific), will officially open the
exhibition <em>Jade, The Ultimate Treasure of Ancient China</em> at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on Thursday, September 6,
2001 at 7:30 p.m. Media representatives are welcome to attend.</font></p>
<p><font size="-1">Organized by the Canadian Foundation for the Preservation of Chinese Cultural and Historical Treasures and the
China Cultural Relics Co-ordination Centre, this is one of the first exhibits to receive aid from the Government of
Canada's Travelling Exhibitions Indemnification Program. The program guarantees travelling exhibits against any
loss or damage. </font></p>
<p><font size="-1">The exhibit presents 120 national treasures from China, many of which have never been seen outside China. The
showpiece of the collection is a jade burial garment dating back to the 2nd century B.C. Experts estimate that it
would have taken more than 10 years to complete the dress, composed of more than 2156 pieces of jade and sewn
with 703 grams of gold thread. </font></p>
<p><font size="-1">Canada and China also have a bilateral memorandum of understanding on Cultural Exchanges and Co-operation that
creates a framework for co-operation in the fields of heritage preservation, cultural diversity, cultural industries,
sport and academic exchange.</font></p>

inaugurera l'exposition <em>Jade,</em> <em>The Ultimate Treasure of Ancient China</em> (Le jade, trésor ultime de la Chine antique) à

<p><font size="-1">Organisée par la Fondation canadienne de la préservation des trésors culturels et historiques chinois et le China
Cultural Relics Co-ordination Centre, elle est une des premières expositions à bénéficier de l'appui du Programme
d'indemnisation pour les expositions itinérantes du gouvernement du Canada. Ce programme assure les expositions
contre les pertes et dommages.</font></p>
<p><font size="-1">Cette exposition regroupe 120 pièces du patrimoine national chinois, dont plusieurs ne sont jamais sorties de Chine.
La pièce maîtresse de la collection est un vêtement mortuaire en jade remontant au II<sup>e</sup> siècle avant J.-C. Selon les
experts, la confection de ce vêtement aurait exigé plus de 10 ans; il est composé d'au moins 2 156 pièces de jade et
est cousu avec 703 grammes de fil d'or.</font></p>
<p><font size="-1">Le Canada et la Chine ont aussi signé un protocole d'entente bilatéral sur les échanges culturels et la collaboration,
qui crée un cadre pour appuyer la coopération dans les domaines de la préservation du patrimoine, de la diversité
culturelle, des industries culturelles, des sports et des échanges universitaires.</font></p>
