<p><font face="Arial"></font><font face="Arial">International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today released a volume of papers that provide an in-depth and
thought-provoking look at trade issues. The papers deal head-on with what are often contentious issues, in an
attempt to add to the public debate on and understanding of trade.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">"<em>Trade Policy Research 2002</em> is a forward-looking document that will stimulate thoughtful trade policy
discussion," said Minister Pettigrew. "It goes beyond the 30-second sound bite to offer insight into the thinking
behind trade policy." </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">This year's book builds on the research and analysis carried out in <em>Trade Policy Research 2001</em>. Subjects range
from globalization to liberalizing trade in services.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">"Trade and investment impact on the economic well-being of all Canadians," said Mr. Pettigrew. "As a
government, we are committed to transparency and to promoting open discussion. <em>Trade Policy Research 2002</em>
is part of this process." </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">Canadians are invited to read and comment on the ideas raised. There are a limited number of hard copies
available in both official languages from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The

<p><font face="Arial">This volume will be followed on May 2 by <em>Trade Update 2002: Third Annual Report on Canada's State of Trade</em>,
which will outline Canada's trade and investment performance for 2001.</font></p>
