  • Report on NAFTA Multistakeholder Roundtable Discussion
    On October 6, 2003, Canada hosted a NAFTA Multistakeholder Roundtable Discussion at the Omni Mont-Royal Hotel, in Montreal. Representatives from over 50 civil society organizations from the business sector, academia, labour unions, environmental groups, and other stakeholders were in attendance. At the end of the day, Pierre S. Pettigrew, Canadian Minister for International Trade, Peter Allgeier, Deputy United States Trade Representative and Angel Villalobos, Mexico's Undersecretary for International Trade joined in the roundtable and received a summary of discussion that took place during the afternoon's activities.   • Reports of the Information Exchange Sessions on the margins of the MIMM
    On July 28, 2003, the Minister for International Trade, Pierre Pettigrew, took part in two information exchange sessions on the margins of the Montreal Informal Mini-Ministerial (MIMM) meeting: a session with NGOs and a lunch with business persons. WTO's Director General (DG) Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, and the Director of the WTO DG office, Mr. Stuart Harbinson, were also in attendance, as well as Canada's Deputy Minister for International Trade, Mr. Len Edwards, and Canada's Ambassador to the WTO, Mr. Sergio Marchi.

  • Report on NAFTA Chapter 11 Multi-stakeholder
    Consultations

    On May 28, 2003, Canada hosted a multi-stakeholder consultation session at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Montreal. This consultation was held on behalf of the NAFTA (Chapter 11) Investment Experts Group, which is made up of officials of the Canadian, U.S., and Mexican governments, and is charged by the NAFTA Free Trade Commission, which is made up of the Trade Ministers of the NAFTA Parties, with reviewing and examining the operation and implementation of Chapter 11. This daylong meeting was held with a view to assist the Investment Experts Group in identifying shared priorities for further work, and in preparation for the next Free Trade Commission meeting to be held in the fall of 2003.   • FTAA Report on Multistakeholder Consultation
    The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), hosted a multistakeholder consultation on Canada and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), which was held in Ottawa on February 27, 2003. This daylong event provided a forum for open and focused discussion on key issues related to the ongoing FTAA negotiations.     On April 15, 2002, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade organized a day of discussion to take stock of progress over the past year with regard to the Summit of the Americas process.

  • WTO Trade and Development Information Exchange and Dialogue
    On July 27, 2001, the Minister for International Trade hosted a WTO Trade and Development Information Exchange and Dialogue with several Canadian organisations dedicated to various aspects of the intersection between trade and development. Representatives from two Canadian NGOs presented their report on a Symposium hosted by the WTO Secretariat earlier in the month. The session also provided an opportunity to examine with the Minister some of the implications for Canadians of a November 2001 WTO Ministerial Conference that may have "development" as one of its defining themes and objectives.   • Multistakeholder Information Exchange Session on the Summit of the Americas
    On March 28, 2001, organizations representing a broad range of interests including human rights, environmental, business, academic, labour and international development were invited to a Summit of the Americas Information Exchange session in Ottawa (see List of Participants). The objective of the session was to engage in a balanced and informed dialogue about issues of importance to the government and citizens concerning the Summit. The session was also an opportunity to provide information to committed stakeholders in the context of an ongoing review of Summit-related meetings. Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Manley and Minister for International Trade, Pierre Pettigrew, together with Canadian senior officials, addressed the group and responded to comments and questions from participants (see the Summary Report of the Session).   • Multistakeholder Consultation on Canada's Trade Agenda
    On May 20, 1999, the Minister for International Trade held a Multistakeholder Consultation meeting with individuals representing a broad range of interests including business, labour, environmental, human rights, international development, academia, consumers, youth and gender groups (see List of participants). The objectives of this forum were to engage in a dialogue with a view to identifying common grounds on horizontal aspects of Canada's trade agenda and to seek ways to enhance the process of engaging Canadians. A Discussion paper was circulated prior to the meeting and a Summary Report of the meeting was prepared by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
