Notice to Exporters to Brazil
-
On February 23, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that it was lifting the temporary suspension on the importation of Brazilian beef products as a result of the findings of a tripartite scientific team assessing the Brazilian regulatory system for the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
-
On February 2, the CFIA, supported by Health Canada, had suspended imports of beef products from Brazil which are subject to Canada's policy for BSE, and removed these products from the marketplace. This action was taken to protect consumers and safeguard the country's food supply.
-
With the suspension lifted, Canada will resume importing Brazilian beef products in accordance with Canada's prescribed BSE import standards.
-
Information on this issue may be obtained on the CFIA's
website.
-
Since Canada's February 2 announcement, there have been reports that some Canadian commercial interests in Brazil have been negatively affected. We have received reports of Brazilian boycotts of Canadian products, refusals to unload shipments of Canadian goods and concerns with respect to contracts with Canadian companies.
-
We have advised the Brazilian government that Canada expects Brazil to abide by its international trade obligations with respect to the treatment of Canadian exports and Canadian companies.
-
Canada is monitoring the situation carefully and we urge Canadian companies to alert us to any difficulties they are experiencing in the Brazilian market. Please contact us.
-
Companies involved in export or investment transactions in Brazil should consult with Brazil-based import agents and customs brokers.
-
Further updates will be posted on this website as and when developments arise.
