Nuclear Reactor Upgrade Good day, my name is Sergey Smolsky. I am the Deputy Director for Neutron Research at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute. I am responsible for the operation of all the reactors at the Institute. The reactors that we have are a research VVRM reactor, the critical bench for the peak reactor, and a peak reactor that is still being constructed. It is the VVRM reactor where Canada is assisting with upgrading physical protection, and I’m very thankful to Canada for providing this assistance to us in ensuring the protection of these reactors. We greatly appreciate this assistance from Canada because it enhances the protection of the reactors here at the Institute and in general enhances the security of all the nuclear installations. I’ve been working at the Institute for more than 30 years. I was a researcher at various nuclear facilities; for some time I was the lead of the work that is being done on the critical work bench, and for 10 years I’ve been working as the chief engineer of the peak reactor. I’ve been the Deputy Director of the Institute for about three years.
