CANADA WELCOMES PROGRESS TOWARD IMPLEMENTATION OF
ERITREA-ETHIOPIA BOUNDARY COMMISSION RULING
Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew today issued the following statement after the
announcement by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of a peace plan that would
include the implementation of the April 2002 decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary
Commission:
“This is a very positive development for both Ethiopia and Eritrea. We look forward to
the early start of the demarcation process and the full implementation of the
Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission ruling. Peace in the region is absolutely
necessary if both countries want to realize their plans for sustainable social and
economic development.
“Canada is looking forward to the engagement of all parties, including Dr. Lloyd
Axworthy, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Ethiopia and
Eritrea, in moving the peace process forward.
“The Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission was established in 2000 to delimit and
oversee demarcation of the border. Both Eritrea and Ethiopia agreed to be bound by
the Commission’s decision. Canada fully endorses both the Commission and its work.”
