MINISTER MACKAY EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES

FOLLOWING PHILIPPINES LANDSLIDE

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay today issued the following statement on the landslide that occurred on Leyte Island in the Philippines:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to offer my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of life caused by the February 17 landslides. Our thoughts are with the suffering families.

“Canada stands ready to assist the government and people of the Philippines.

“Although no Canadians are known to be among the victims at this time, I have instructed Canadian officials to continue monitoring the situation and to provide emergency consular assistance in the area.”
