Air

AirAir is a common term for the atmosphere: the layer of nitrogen, oxygen and other trace gases that surround our planet and make life on Earth possible.

The atmosphere is a complex natural system. Air pollution from transportation, industries, and other sources causes an imbalance in this system by modifying its chemical composition. Living things are affected by air pollution in a variety of negative ways.

This section contains information on Environment Canada's efforts to reduce air pollution and better understand its levels, causes and sources.

    Twenty years ago in Montreal, Canada joined 23 other countries to sign the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In September 2007, the world will once again convene, this time to celebrate the anniversary of the Protocol's signing. Canada is proud to host this historic meeting for the 20th anniversary in the city where this milestone agreement was born.
