Additional Federal Funding Awarded for Public Participation in Environmental Assessment of Proposed Kemess North Project
OTTAWA, February 14, 2007 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded $190,000 to two applicants in support of their participation in the environmental review by a joint federal-provincial panel of the proposed Kemess North Copper-Gold Mine project in British Columbia. The recipients are the Tse Keh Nay First Nation and the Gitxsan House of Nii Kyap.
A Participant Funding Review Committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, reviewed the requests and provided recommendations on funding. Based on supplementary information recently provided by the applicants and on the special circumstances of the project, the Agency has decided to provide funds in addition to the amounts recommended by the Committee. The total funding amount represents $100,000 originally set aside for this project, plus $90,000 in additional funding.
The funding assists the participants in providing submissions to the Joint Panel on the environmental review. Funding is made available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency.
The Committee’s report and addendums [1, 2], along with further information on the project, are available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under registry number 04-07-3394.
