Interest-based Negotiation in Environmental Assessment

While knowing how to conduct an environmental assessment is important, successful practitioners and others involved in EA know that negotiation skills are integral to finding common ground between diverse and often conflicting interests. This workshop will provide you with the skills needed to understand and respond to conflict in EA.

Ideal participants

Individuals involved in planning, managing, conducting, reviewing or participating in environmental assessments pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. This training is particularly useful for those that already have experience in EA.

Outcomes and benefits

The course will:

  • increase your understanding of conflict and responses to conflict

  • help you to identify when the intervention of a neutral third party can be useful

  • prepare you with the skills needed to negotiate in EA, using an interest-based negotiation model

Features

You will have the opportunity to:

  • interact with a variety of players in the federal environmental assessment process and share experiences in dealing with conflict

  • engage in practical negotiation excercises involving real EA situations

  • explore how interest-based negotiation can be applied to your personal work in dealing with federal environmental assessment

Course duration

2½ days

"Understanding CEAA can be learned from manuals or on the job... but negotiation must be seen and practiced. It's a skill that is becoming more widespread throughout industry, public interest groups, government etc. -- so without it, one is at a disadvantage."

Course Participant, Toronto, October 2002
