NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT

of an environmental assessment

Developmental Blue Mussel Aquaculture Site - Presque Harbour

Presque Harbour (NL)

February 9, 2007 -- Transport Canada will conduct a screening commencing on February 9, 2007 of the project: Developmental Blue Mussel Aquaculture Site - Presque Harbour.

The proponent proposes to develop a 538 hectare developmental blue mussel aquaculture site in Presque Harbour, Placentia Bay, NL. The site will be used for collecting seed and growing blue mussels. At full capacity the site will consist of 60,000 collectors and 60,000 socks attached to 20 mainlines. The 1000 m long mainlines will be spaced approximately 50 m apart. Each 4 m sock will have an anticipated yield of 18 kg per sock. At peak production the site will produce 540,000 kg of mussels with a production cycle of 24 months.

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Transport Canada may issue an approval under paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
