Tsunami Debris and Waste Management Program

The Canadian International Development Agency will conduct a screening commencing on February 5, 2007 of the project:
Tsunami Debris and Waste Management Program.
Construction of one WMC (approx. area of 280m2), which consists of concrete hardstand, concrete block wall separation bays, partial metal sheet roofing, a rainwater harvesting system, a leachate collection system, and boundary fence. Cleanup operations include the collection of (approx. 2800m3)rubble and household waste from destroyed homes and an area of dispersed litter on the NE shoreline. Non-reusable wastes will be transferred from the island to a regional landfill facility for recycling and/or disposal.
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because the Canadian International Development Agency may provide financial assistance to the proponent for the purpose of enabling the project.
