Agency's Contribution to Sustainable DevelopmentDisclaimer: "Some electronic documents are currently available only in Adobe's Portable Document Format. Contact the responsible office provided for each document for an alternative format" The Agency's commitment to sustainable development (SD) is ensconced in the preamble to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (the Act), established in 1995: "...The Government of Canada seeks to achieve sustainable development by conserving and enhancing environmental quality and by encouraging and promoting economic development that conserves and enhances environmental quality. ...Environmental assessment provides an effective means of integrating environmental factors into planning and decision-making processes in a manner that promotes sustainable development." The Act and the 1999 Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policies, Plans and Programs (the Directive) form the basis of the federal environmental assessment process, at both the project and the policy level. The objective of the Act and the Directive is to provide an effective means of integrating environmental factors into federal planning and decision making in support of SD. Environmental assessment allows for the formation and selection of alternatives that can contribute to SD, as well as to the introduction of measures that ensure negative social, economic and environmental impacts are avoided or minimized.
