Wildlife Management Boards and COSEWIC
Wildlife Management Boards (WMB) are established under land claims agreements. Existing WMBs cover almost all of Nunavut, northern NWT, the Yukon and parts of Quebec and British Columbia, and provide direction on the sustainable use of wildlife resources within their jurisdiction(s).
Communication between COSEWIC and the WMBs will improve the designation process for species at risk. WMBs have access to information on wildlife in their settlement regions and they have the ability to facilitate communication between COSEWIC and the hunters and trappers with substantial knowledge of species of interest. To this end, the WMBs and COSEWIC have developed a process for ensuring that information held by the WMBs is included in COSEWC's assessment process.
