Do I have to Consult with the Public?Benefits of Public ParticipationEnsuring opportunity for public participation in environmental assessments is one of the purposes of the Act. Timely and meaningful public participation gives interested parties the opportunity to put forward their knowledge and views on your project. This in turn may help improve the design of the project. Public involvement can also help build trust and acceptance of the project and the environmental assessment process. Your Project and the PublicYou should take measures to understand and address the range of public concerns that may arise for your project. It is important to remember that the public is not a single entity but is comprised of varied interests (e.g., local residents, environmental groups, business owners). An effective public participation program should provide a variety of opportunities for consulting with interested parties. As a proponent, you may undertake public consultation for your proposed project; however, you must keep in mind that the responsible authority(ies) may have specific requirements under the Act that should be considered when planning your public participation program.
