CCI Client Categories

CCI categorizes its clients based on the designations described in the table below.

When you create an e-Services account, you must assign your organization to one of these groups. If you are unsure how your organization should be categorized, contact CCI Client Services for assistance.

CCI Eligible Client Categories*
Identifier Category Description Comments and Examples
M1 Small Canadian not-for-profit, incorporated public museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites (budget less than $100,000) whose primary role is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit (for purposes of study, education, and enjoyment) permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public
  • represents about 65% of all museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites in Canada
  • does not include commercial art galleries, archives of commercial firms, and historic buildings that are being used for their intended purpose (P1)
M2 Medium-sized Canadian not-for-profit, incorporated public museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites (budget between $100,000 and $999,999) whose primary role is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit (for purposes of study, education, and enjoyment) permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public
  • represents about 30% of all museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites in Canada
  • does not include commercial art galleries, archives of commercial firms, and historic buildings that are being used for their intended purpose (P1)
M3 Large Canadian not-for-profit, incorporated public museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites (budget $1,000,000 or more) whose primary role is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit (for purposes of study, education, and enjoyment) permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public
  • represents about 5% of all museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites in Canada
  • does not include commercial art galleries, archives of commercial firms, and historic buildings that are being used for their intended purpose (P1)
M4 Museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, and historic sites under the jurisdiction of the Government of Canada, whose primary role is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit (for purposes of study, education, and enjoyment) permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public
  • examples: Department of National Defence military museums; National Historic Sites administered by Parks Canada; Canadian Currency Museum; libraries and archives administered by the Government of Canada
  • does not include the “Nationals” (M5)
M5 The “Nationals” — Portfolio Agencies of the Department of Canadian Heritage whose primary role is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit (for purposes of study, education, and enjoyment) permanent heritage collections that are accessible to the Canadian public
  • includes National Gallery of Canada, Canadian Museum of Nature, Canada Science and Technology Museum, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Library and Archives Canada, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Canadian War Museum, Canada Agriculture Museum, Canada Aviation Museum, Portrait Gallery of Canada, Canadian Postal Museum
A1 Heritage and conservation associations — Canada
  • examples: Canadian Museum Association, provincial and territorial museum associations, Canadian associations representing archaeology, archives, conservation, and artists
A2 Heritage and conservation associations — International
  • examples: International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, International Council of Museums Conservation Committee, Society for Preservation of Natural History Collections
  • does not include national associations of foreign countries (e.g. American Institute for Conservation, American Association of Museums)
G1 Department of Canadian Heritage and Portfolio Agencies
  • examples: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National Film Board of Canada, Telefilm Canada, etc.
  • does not include the “Nationals” (M5)
G2 Other federal departments
  • examples: National Capital Commission, Public Works and Government Services Canada, Transportation Safety Board, and federal law enforcement agencies such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
G3 Provincial/Territorial governments
  • includes provincial law enforcement agencies such as the Ontario Provincial Police
G4 Municipal governments
  • includes municipal law enforcement agencies
E1 Educational and training programs in Canada — conservation
  • examples: Queen’s University, Fleming College, University of Alberta
E2 Educational/training programs in Canada — heritage related
  • programs in museology, archaeology, archives, etc.
C1 Incorporated, not-for-profit, community-based organizations representing Aboriginal communities and societies in Canada
  • includes Aboriginal organizations representing First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities
  • examples: Aboriginal service delivery organizations, First Nations and Inuit governments, Aboriginal cultural education centres, and Aboriginal friendship centres
  • does not include museums, art galleries, and archives associated with or managed by Aboriginal organizations (M group)
C2 Incorporated, not-for-profit, community-based organizations representing ethno-cultural communities and societies in Canada
  • includes multicultural and ethno-cultural organizations, associations, centres, and non-governmental organizations
  • does not include museums, art galleries, and archives associated with or managed by multicultural and ethno-cultural organizations (M group)
C3 Incorporated, not-for-profit, community-based organizations representing religious communities and societies in Canada
  • includes places of worship
  • does not include museums, art galleries, and archives associated with or managed by religious organizations (M group)
P1 Canadian private sector/general public
  • includes corporations, businesses, private conservators, artists, auction houses, commercial art galleries, private collectors, the general public
F1 Foreign — not-for-profit organizations and institutions, and professionals directly involved in heritage or conservation
  • includes not-for-profit heritage institutions with permanent collections accessible to the public, conservation educational and training programs
F2 Foreign — other
  • includes corporations, businesses, artists, auction houses, commercial art galleries, private collectors, the general public

* CCI Eligible Client Categories are used to determine eligibility for various CCI expert services and training, and the fees, if any, associated with these services. CCI also uses these categories for reporting purposes.
