Treatment of a 16th-century Spanish Panel Painting

Descente de croix was given, in 1940, by a private donor to the Musée des Augustines du Monastère de l’Hôtel de Dieu du Québec. This panel painting was recently treated at the Canadian Conservation Institute in anticipation of its exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec (“Once in French America”), which opened June 11, 2004.

This painting most likely formed part of a larger sacred group, possibly the Stations of the Cross. This Deposition scene dates from the mid 16th century and is Spanish in origin; this is evident from both the style of painting as well as the method of panel construction.
