Everyone is invited!

Hosted by the Canadian Conservation Institute, the Library and Archives of Canada, and the Canadian Heritage Information Network, this special event is designed to raise public awareness about the preservation of personal electronic records such as home movies and videos, sound recordings (vinyl records, cassettes, audio CDs), digital photographs, and data files (diskettes and CDs).

The afternoon promises to be both fun and informative. Come join us and make sure your own electronic treasures are not lost forever!

The Master of Ceremony will be Ken "The General" Grant.

A variety of experts in preserving electronic records will be on hand, so bring your questions! For instance.....

How long will the videotapes of my wedding or my baby’s first steps last, and what can I do to preserve them? In 20 years, will I still be able to access all the files I have burned on CDs? What should I do with my old 8 mm home movies? What is the difference between a CD and a DVD? What can I do with a scratched CD? Can I use a CD-R for long-term storage of information? Can I get back a file that I have erased? How should I preserve computer diskettes?

The organizing partners will be available to discuss their work, answer questions about their organizations and introduce you to some fascinating Web sites.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum in conjunction with the Canadian Conservation Institute will be launching a brand new exhibit on the preservation of electronic records in the lobby of the Library and Archives of Canada.

	Special guest speaker Dr. Joe Schwarcz will be on hand to open the event and give two fascinating talks: one on information preservation throughout history and the other on the science of movies (see Information Sessions)..

	A tour of the Audio Conservation Studio, Music Divison, Library and Archives of Canada will be conducted every 30 minutes throughout the afternoon.

	Special activities will be available for children.
