Quebec (QC)
June 2, 2006 --
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada will conduct a screening commencing on May 19, 2006 of the project:
Dam construction, nickel and copper mining, Raglan South mine, Puvirnituq River, Nunavik.
In the context of the Raglan South Nickel Project, Canadian Royalties Inc. is planning the construction of a dike and a reservoir on a tributary of the Puvirnituq River and the construction of access roads that will necessitate the installation of structures to permit the crossing of several watercourses, including a bridge across the Puvirnituq River.
Based on analysis of the project proposal submitted to the responsible authorities, the following elements were identified for inclusion in the scope of the project:
' Construction of a dike and a reservoir on a tributary of the Puvirnituq River;
' Works related to access roads to navigable stream crossings;
' Works or related activities required for the completion of these infrastructures (e.g., temporary access roads, cofferdams, riprap armouring, stone revetment, backfilling, shoreline naturalization areas, etc.).
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act and Transport Canada may issue an approval under paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
This project is also being assessed by the Government of Québec.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.
