Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada will conduct a screening commencing on June 28, 2006 of the project:
WHARF REPAIR, DÉCEPTION BAY, HUDSON STRAIT.
The project involves the repair and modification of the existing wharf at Déception Bay in Nunavik, which has reached the end of its useful life. The wharf reconstruction involves the installation of new structures adjacent to the existing wharf.
The project scope includes the following:
' dredging of approximately 6,000 m3 of sediment for the installation of the new structures;
' at-sea disposal of the dredged sediment;
' encroachment on the marine environment resulting from the implementation of the new structures;
' construction of the new structures adjacent to the existing wharf;
' all fish habitat compensation developments;
' all necessary related structures or activities (e.g., temporary wharf, cofferdams, riprap protection, backfilling, etc.)
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act and Environment Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 71(1) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
This project is also being assessed by the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement Regime.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.
