NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT

of an environmental assessment

Construction of marine infrastructure in Nunavik, Kangiqsualujjuaq, George River, Phase II

Kangiqsualujjuaq (QC)

January 18, 2007 (Update) -- Fisheries and Oceans Canada will conduct a screening commencing on January 9, 2007 of the project: Construction of marine infrastructure in Nunavik, Kangiqsualujjuaq, George River, Phase II.

Extension of a breakwater by 45 m. Expansion of two service areas to a total of 1,800 m2 each. Widening of the existing ramp to 130 m. Construction of a new 20-m wide ramp with a grade of 10%. Addition of navigation lights and lighting for the service area. The project scope includes the construction of a breakwater and access ramp, expansion of the service areas and widening of the existing access ramp. It also includes associated works and activities required for the construction of the infrastructure (e.g., temporary access roads, cofferdams, filling, shoreline naturalization areas, etc.).

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act.

This project is also being assessed by the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement Regime.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.
