May 15, 2006 -- Environment Canada will conduct a screening commencing on May 8, 2006 of the project: Collecting Parasites from Seabirds at Witless Bay, Cape St. Mary's and Gannet Islands, Newfoundland.

The proponent will collect a total of 60 adult Common Murres and 30 adult Thick-billed Murres at Witless Bay and Gannet Islands, Newfoundland, to help to establish the current range of the tapeworm Alcataenia longicervica. Birds will be captured using a noose and euthanized using cervical dislocation. The proponent will also capture the following seabird species and hold them briefly to assess, and in some cases remove, ectoparasites, primarily ticks: up to 60 Herring Gull chicks; 30 Greater Black-backed Gull chicks; 60 Black-legged Kittiwake chicks; 60 chick and 60 adult Razorbills; 60 Common Murres; 30 Northern Gannet chicks; and 120 chick and 120 adult Atlantic Puffins at the Gannet Islands, Labrador and Cape St. Mary's and Gull Island, Newfoundland. This is the third year of a four-year study of the parasites of north Atlantic seabirds.

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Environment Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 4(1) of the Migratory Birds Regulations.
