Point May Pond, Basin and Channel Dredging
POINT MAY (NL)
March 6, 2007 --
Fisheries and Oceans Canada will conduct a screening commencing on March 6, 2007 of the project:
Point May Pond, Basin and Channel Dredging.
The proposed project covers the removal of approximately two thousand cubic meters (2,000 m3) of Class `B' (sand, gravel, and cobble) material from two target areas. One thousand cubic metres (1000 m3) of material will be removed from an area approximately three thousand square metres (3000 m2) within the access channel to Point May Pond (shown as Dredge Area A on the site photos). An additional approximately one thousand cubic metres (1000 m3) of material will be removed from an area approximately two thousand square metres (2000 m2) at the northern most end of Point May Pond (shown as Dredge Area B on the site photos). Target dredge elevation is -1.0 metres. Wherever possible, the dredging equipment will work from dry, stable shoreline areas. However, should this not be possible, a common method, involves using dredge material from within the target dredge area to construct a temporary road and work platform from which the excavator can reach the dredge limits. This temporary road is removed as the excavator works its way back to shore. The successful contractor in consultation with Public Works and Government Services Canada and appropriate regulators will determine the specific dredging methodology. No blasting is required.
Subject to regulatory approval, the two thousand cubic metres (2000 m3) of the dredged material removed from both areas, (Dredge Area A & B), will be side-casted above the high water mark. Disposal Area A measures sixty metres (60 m) by thirty metres (30 m) and is located to the southeast of the channel dredging area (Disposal Area A on photo). Disposal Area B is located to the east of the basin dredging (Disposal Area B on photo) and measures approximately thirty metres (30 m) by thirty metres (30 m). Both disposal areas are located above the high water mark and are the same disposal locations that were previously used by the local fishers.
As part of this project's preplanning process, four (4) marine sediment samples were collect.
The scope of project will be posted when available.
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada may provide financial assistance to the proponent for the purpose of enabling the project and is the proponent for the project.
