Bear River Gravel Project - Gravel Extraction Operation

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada will conduct a screening commencing on July 11, 2005 of the project:
Bear River Gravel Project - Gravel Extraction Operation .
The dredging and sale of gravel from the Bear River Estuary and the reactivation and expansion of a port.The scope of project includes Dredging within the Bear River estuary; infilling of approximately 2.3 hectares of the Bear River estuary, located at the south end of the existing dock; infilling of approximately 7.5 hectares of the Bear River estuary, located adjacent to the Tercon Fill; constructing and operating of a fish passage channel; works required as compensation for the loss of fish habitat; constructing, operating, modifying, decommissioning or abandonment of the following works: the conveyor and loading system, the permanent dock facilities, the processing and stockpile areas, the sediment filtration pond.
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Fisheries and Oceans Canada may issue a permit or license under subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act and Transport Canada may issue an approval under paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
This project is also being assessed by the Government of British Columbia.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.
