Hydrology of Polar Bear Pass - NWA Access Permit Application

NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT

of an environmental assessment

Hydrology of Polar Bear Pass - NWA Access Permit Application

Polar Bear Pass National Wildlife Area (NU)

April 26, 2006 -- Environment Canada will conduct a screening commencing on April 21, 2006 of the project: Hydrology of Polar Bear Pass - NWA Access Permit Application.

Project scope: High Arctic wetlands are important ecological niches but insufficient information about their hydrology exists so we do not know how they will respond to future changes in climate. This study seeks to understand the hydrology of Polar Bear Pass, an extensive low-gradient wetland and the most important ecological area on Bathurst Island, Nunavut.

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Environment Canada may issue a permit or license under section 4 of the Wildlife Area Regulations.
